Phi Slama Jama: ESPN 30 For 30 (Full Video)
It’s almost 100% baseball mode round these parts right now (Go Cubs!) but I was able to catch up on the ole DVR this week of the autumn return of ESPN’s 30 For 30 documentary series.
Most, if not all of these, are must-see but I love basketball and I only have faint stories and memories around Phi Slama Jama from the early 80s so I knew going in that I was going to love this one. Hakeem is one of my favorite non-Bulls from the nineties and I always thought it was crazy he and Clyde Drexler were college teammates (and later NBA Champions in Houston too.)
Little did I know, I would be fascinated by the story of one of their Houston Cougars’ teammates: Benny Anders. The athletic swingman pretty much vanished from contact for 25/30 years now and this documentary not only focuses on the whole team and their three NCAA Final Fours but also the co-captains’ quest to find Benny after all these years. I love how they mixed in this story throughout and of course how it all develops too. See how that goes and set aside a little over an hour for this 30 For 30.
