Prince — Piano & A Microphone: “Purple Rain” and “Kiss”
As news of Prince’s death hit yesterday, scores of people wanted to learn more about the singular superstar.
Prince currently was doing surprise pop-up shows all around the world as part of his Piano & A Microphone tour. Even this deep into his career, Prince was selling out venues within minutes and giving audiences a brand new experience by performing solo behind a piano. We’ve gone digging thru the Purple Underground (Prince fans’ bootleg game is no joke!) and found these piano-only versions of “Purple Rain” and “Kiss,” both of which he performed for the first/only time ever this year.
The Piano & A Microphone tour also saw Prince perform a few unexpected covers of other classic artists’ songs, showing off his range and all-around excellent inspiration. Check out his renditions of Ray Charles’ “Unchain My Heart” and the recently-departed David Bowie’s “Heroes.”
UPDATE: The songs, including the “Batdance (Remix)” we had with Big Daddy Kane, have since been taken down :-/
It’s hard to believe someone who was doing this just two weeks ago is now gone.
Even if you never really got into him, chances are you’re a huge fan of someone (Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean, etc.) who was directly inspired by Prince to make the art that you love. Here’s to Prince’s music and influence lasting forever.
