The Weeknd “Starboy” f/ Daft Punk
The Weeknd follows up his album announcement with the first single and title track just mere hours after.
“Starboy”, the song gets just the right amount of glitchy, electro vocals from Daft Punk, and it’s going to be rising to #1 sooner than later.
I like The Weeknd a lot, but overall the balance of pop in his last album steered me a tier below where I used to be. This one has an edgier sound with Daft Punk on board and it’s more of a cool vibe that’s just going to happen to breech the mainstream.
Lyrics wise, this is where an artist at the top starts to write what he only knows about now: fame and celebrity status. “Starboy” is the Jamaican slang for celebrity after all. Here, Weeknd executes it all well at least with some sleek delivery in the verses making for a captivating listen even if Daft Punk wasn’t gracing the chorus alongside Abel.
The most interesting line I thought was,
No competition, I don’t really listen
I’m in the blue Mulsanne bumping New Edition
Weeknd, seemingly not impressed by the rest of the game, is bumpin’ some New Edition classics (in one of his many foreign cars as well.)
Give this a look. I think “Starboy” will have its phase with my tastes and I expect more longer lasting records on his album of the same name, reportedly looking at a November 25th release. It’s on Apple Music so click below to sample and then listen in full if you’re a subscriber.
