Vic Mensa f/ Kanye West “U Mad”
UPDATE: Here’s the drop, in CDQ form. Once again, Chicago on the boards too: Stefan Ponce x Smoko Ono x D. Phelps and in my opinion, that’s the strongest aspect of the record. (EDIT: FADER interviewed Ponce about the creation of the record, and the outlet (amongst others) cites Mike Dean as a producer and don’t have D. Phelps credited, though he was initially in the preview at the way bottom. *shrugs*)
I was humming the horns melody instantly and loved it when the hook came back around. The big sound (dare I say anthemic?) will surely grab you on first listen and I’m sure many of the lines from Vic and Ye will soon follow. Though Vic’s Ray Rice line will surely raise a few eyebrows (very quest, but people will be talkin’ about it…), Kanye’s “photothot” word will definitely enter the mainstream lexicon. My favorite reference is Kanye’s Montell Jordan “This Is How We Do It” line — an open invitation for DJs to blend it in. Please do.
Having said that, “U Mad” is definitely a new Chicago turn up track so it’s only right it drops just before your Friday night today. Not saying that if you’re not from Chicago you won’t appreciate it just the same because you probably will. I just like how ‘Ye not only assisted his newfound collaborator Vic Mensa, but hopped on a hype beat from other Chicago up and comers, Ponce, Ono, and Phelps (that has a good ring to it.)

As an aside, I’m sure like many of you are puzzled as to why the CDQ of “Wolves” hasn’t dropped yet and it’s been 2 months now. I’m hotly anticipating the track and just can’t bring myself to listen to the ripped version from the adidas video more than once in awhile because the quality is still so bad. My theory on why it hasn’t dropped is that not only is Kanye getting the rest of the album ready, but considering the perfectionist he is, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear some new layers on the beat or something to that effect when the song finally does drop in CDQ form. Just had to have it e-written. Carry on…
04.07.15: Get a fan recorded preview of “U Mad” from Vic Mensa’s new set this weekend as he premiered his upcoming hype collab with Kanye West. You can hear the latter’s verse on the Stefan Ponce x Smoko Ono x D Phelps produced cut below, but I think I may hold out for the studio version assuming it comes to fruition soon.
