It’s officially summer!
Seriously, June 21st — the official first day of summer. It’s likely you have already felt summer was here, but now we have the soundtrack perfect for your rooftop BBQ’s, outdoor picnics, and the like courtesy of, for the fifth time, DJ Jazzy Jeff & Mick (who dropped the Boogie). I’ve long enjoyed the Summertime series that annually brings together two living legends of hip hop DJs as they merge music choices and mixing skills for an always on-point mix of summer party classics.
For Summertime Vol. 5, Jazz & Mick start the “smooveness” with some midtempo R&B from the likes of Alicia Keys, Usher, and Pharrell that will transport you back to the mid 2000s. As the good grooves continue, it transitions into classic hip hop of the De La Soul & Common caliber. And of course, the mix contains many 80s and 90s hip hop and R&B summer staples that will get any party jumpin’ (dare I say, Montell Jordan “Somethin’ For The Honeyz”?). I’ve pressed play and am instantly in a feel-good summer mood even though it’s currently raining at flash flood level warnings in the Chi. That’s the serious power this one has though — Jeff & Mick are settin summer right again!
One more note warranting mentioning: major nod to DJ Jazzy Jeff’s EA Sports tee and Mick’s NBA Live 95 tee (need that).
