At 3pm Friday, the flood gates will open, and Union Park will transform into a sea of cheap sunglasses and bandanas – at least, I hope so. I can’t speak on behalf of everyone but this guy sure as hell can’t be trusted with any sunglasses over $15 (those 2 for $20, feel me). And best believe I’m leaving the Saint Alfred snap back on the shelf after losing one to a show I’d rather not talk about, couple weeks back. But anyway…
Friday, I’m goin’ up with iLoveMakonnen, representing the only Hip Hop presence of the day. Maybe Drake shows up, maybe he doesn’t (Spoiler alert: he won’t). Come Saturday, we get a bigger slice of the pie with Vince Staples, Future Brown, A$AP Ferg, and Vic Mensa. But Sunday’s juiced too with Madlib & Freddie Gibbs, Run The Jewels, and Chance – who closes out the fest.
In between sets, you can find me eating something off a stick as I rummage through Flatstock – a gathering of “the country’s best show poster artists” where prints can be viewed and purchased. Or in one of the bevy of fairs – record, craft, and book – featured at Pitchfork for all your keepsake desires.
Obviously, one of the fun parts of any festival is seeing artists you’ve never seen before, or maybe never even heard of. I always ask friends to browse the lineup for me and holler if there’s anyone I should catch. But it’s also fun to just walk around and let the music pull you in. So go ahead and do that, k? Forecast this weekend looks like it may get a lil’ wet, so maybe pack a small umbrella/poncho, or not (hell if I care). Will call opens at 1pm and gates open at 3pm Friday (Noon on Sat/Sun). See you in the trenches.
