Big Boi‘s #MashupMondays is here with “Lanes” featuring A$AP Rocky, Phantogram & A-ha’s “Take On Me”. The latter, as one of the 80s’ most recognizable melodies, is sampled and chopped to the production and will be an easy ear-grabber for any age listener. Naturally, this one is pretty fresh. Kendrick Lamar teams up with Australian rock band Tame Impala for “Backwards” which is to be featured on the Divergent Soundtrack, due for a March 11 release date. The soundtrack is to feature Chance the Rapper, A$AP Rocky , Ellie Goulding, and many more.
Can Kendrick be stopped?
For those who don’t know the French DJ/producer Gesaffelstein, he was a collaborator on Yeezus, and for anyone who’s spun his stellar solo project Aleph, you can see how his influence infected ‘Ye’s latest album. Now he’s branching out more into hip hop with the production/feature on “In Distress” with A$AP Rocky for the upcoming Divergent soundtrack.
The final product is hearing A$AP on a Yeezus-esque sound and that alone is very interesting. To me, it worked and didn’t work. It worked in A$AP’s more lyrical, complex second verse. I wasn’t vibing with the quick bars in verse 1, however. Nevertheless, it’s a listen I would certainly suggest and probably the coolest track to drop on this happy Friday.
