“Beggin For Thread” has been in steady rotation since its release last week as upstart L.A. singer Banks has really caught my attention with this and her previous project, Fall Over. The new single off the upcoming, Goddess, (September 8) now gains some appropriately dark visuals featuring the close-up contortions of many people (who definitely practice yoga). I dig the vibe and how the visuals can be paralleled with the lyrics — unique in their own right.
The L.A. singer Banks, whom Weeknd fans are already in tune with after the Kiss Land tour last fall, is prepping her debut studio album, Goddess, for a September 9th release and her newest preview is “Beggin For Thread”. This one has a lighter tone than most of her work, and that’s not a bad thing. Her vocals are hypnotizing in combination with the synths that have a vintage late 80s feel IMO (I’m reminded of “Take My Breath Away” namely, they’re just less apparent here.) I’m captivated and already on repeat listens. Now lookin’ even more forward to what else is in store for Goddess in the coming months.
BANKS came through BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge and did a beautiful unplugged version of Aaliyah’s classic “Are You That Somebody?”.
The scratchy, closed-string strumming of her performance does a great job of approximating Timbaland’s patented stutter-step, and her quivering, whispering voice is like desire incarnate.
Check the recently-released video for her Shlohmo-produced song “Brain” below, and stay tuned for her debut album due in August.
