NBA Stars Music Motivation

James Harden, CP3, and Allen Iverson were among the stars in attendance at the NBAPA Player Awards that aired on BET last night (recorded Sunday in Vegas.)

Below, BET put together a classic, but always interesting video asking the above stars and more what they listen to before games. CP3 is pretty set on Weezy, who also performed “Glory” live on stage below, and AI… well, he’s pretty set on a certain artist too and it’s probably one you wouldn’t think of at first. Enjoy!

TBT: Rap City’s Biggest Freestyles

Here’s a fresh #TBT post for ya as I just caught wind of The Concourse’s rundown of Rap City’s Biggest Freestyles. They caught a ton of legends in or just approaching their prime so this is a fun trip down memory lane.

Included below: Backpack era Kanye, throwback jersey era Wayne, and whom this format was tailor made for: bandana era Eminem (with D12, R.I.P. Proof).

I just included those 3 — The Concourse has Snoop, T.I., Luda, Dipset, and even Destiny’s Child amongst others.

Kanye West receives BET Visionary Award

Autoplay ALERT! Scroll down real quick and press pause, there’s no getting around this.

Taped last January and airing earlier tonight, Kanye West received the BET Visionary Award and was honored extensively at the 2015 BET Honors.

Upon acceptance, Kanye delivered an 8/9 minute speech that was edited for TV. The full, uncut version is below and, is as you’d expect, a gripping talk. Kanye, in a calm, deliberate demeanor focused on racism and creativity throughout. Though the first half or so had spliced in a couple LOL moments, the latter half is what really resonated with me. Kanye spoke on the micro of races vs. the macro of the human race — a recurring theme in his recent interviews.

He continues to touch on the idea of becoming slaves to the idea of wealth and for black youth, you can only make it as a baller or a rapper. Kanye reminds us to why not try and become an owner. It quite honestly reminded me of this video that expresses the idea that there’s this controlling image being portrayed to the youth and we’re blindly accepting it. I am beginning to see more of this ideal being communicated in various fashions like these couple of examples and I have no doubt it’ll continue.

Lastly, Kanye talks on creativity and how you should never let anyone call your idea stupid or crazy and make sure that your idea gets realized to the fullest. This is all just my paraphrasing. Watch the man himself deliver it below.

Prior to his acceptance, this video tribute aired and featured Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar, Common, Don C, his wife Kim, and even Kanye himself talking about being a visionary. Pay attention to the 2:24 mark where Kanye says he wishes he could do it all anonymously and just wants to make art that impacts the world. Respect!

Finally, we end things on a lighter and equally as awesome note. Wayne Brady did what Will Smith & Jimmy Fallon just did by creating a beat and then performing to it live. Wherein Will & Jimmy beat boxed then performed “It Takes Two”, Wayne Brady used words from Kanye and Usher in the front row as samples and then delivered a pretty amazing song right on the spot. The best part was the end, especially as Kanye increasingly was vibing to it. Very cool.

Kanye West @ 2015 BET Honors

Last night, Kanye West, accompanied by his wife Kim Kardashian, was in Washington D.C. for the taping of the 2015 BET Honors show. He was receiving the ‘Visionary Award’ and details have leaked about ‘Ye’s speech…

Namely, that Dame Dash introduced him and even acknowledged that there’s still some beef between the two. The quotables are below, which even include Yeezy talkin’ about creativity and Kim. Apparently, ‘Ye also briefly freestyled with Charlie Wilson. We’ll see it all unfold on February 29th when the BET Honors Awards is broadcast.

106 & Park to air final episode in December

This news came out of left field as BET announced today that 106 & Park will air its final daily episode on December 19th, ending a long 14 year reign.

Says BET President of Music Programming and Specials, Stephen Hill:

AJ accepting Janet Jackson’s challenge to…dance. Bow Wow laying that kiss on Tyra Banks (or was it the other way around?). Free crawling around the set LIKE Catwoman WITH Catwoman Halle Berry. Julissa’s taking over Halloween as “Wonder Woman.” Keshia brilliantly bonding with First Lady Michelle Obama. Paigion flying around the world with Rihanna on a 777. Rocsi salsa dancing with Victor Cruz and putting him to shame. Shorty and Ms. Mykie’s killer rap, “The History of Justin Timberlake,” visably thrilling JT himself. Terrence beatboxing while Jamie Foxx rhymed. Tigger making Tom Cruise do the of-the-moment “motorcycle dance.”

We all have our favorite moments from the show that has put youth culture on television daily since the first year of this century. We have pride in being involved with the show that has welcomed almost every movie star, music superstar and fresh-faced talent you can name (you can even throw in a first lady). We’ve all laughed with and been entertained by the young men and women hosts that have charmed us at 6 p.m. (and more recently 5 p.m.) each weekday.
All of us have been touched by 106 & Park.

Now it’s time for 106 & Park, as a daily TV entity, to take a bow and exit.

It’s been a great 14-year run as America’s top music/variety show on cable. And now that very valuable brand is going to take its talents to the digital realm. The interactive brand you helped build, 106 & Park, is alive and well…and it’s moving to the space in which our audience NOW interacts with music the most: online. It’ll be very exciting to connect with the millions of people that are already engaged with 106 & Park and other BET digital and social media entities and bring content that will further evolve the 106 & Park brand — and enhance the overall BET Networks brand. As we transition to the digital space, we look to continue 106 & Park’s role as both a leader of and a mirror to youth culture. We’ll have more information to share about how that is to roll out very soon.

And 106 & Park will still have specials on BET. What’s a New Year’s Eve without 106 & Party? 106 & Park Presents: 106 & Party will be on-air to take our viewers into the beginning of the second half of this decade in a big way. And when it’s time for the BET Awards to come around, you can be sure that 106 & Park Presents: Live, Red and Ready will be ushering you into the show and that 106 & Park will be an integral part of the BET Experience.

I’m not trying to minimize it; this is a very big change. We thank all the people who have worked on the show over the years; the talented hosts, the hard-working staff, production crews and all the incredible guests we’ve had. Most of all, we’d like to humbly thank the “livest audience,” both in studio and at home, who fueled this landmark TV show from the very beginning. Meet you in the digital domain.

106 & Park will have its final daily on-air show on BET on December 19.

Onward and upward.
