Guava Island is another Donald Glover masterpiece

I’m finding it hard to say much about Donald Glover’s latest masterpiece, the approximate 1-hour film co-starring Rihanna — Guava Island.

As you probably know by now this weekend, after a stellar headlining performance at Coachella, the mysterious, near-secret project Glover and Rihanna were evidently working on together last year in Cuba is now on Amazon Prime.

The thing is: it’s really better knowing the least about Guava Island as you can before watching it. I, for one, sort of messed up by catching a Reddit thread with the “unofficial soundtrack” and being unable to resist a bootleg-captured scene from the film with the two A-listers (and I’ll leave it at that.)

So alas: I won’t say anything other than it’s phenomenal, captivating, and repeating that Guava Island is a masterpiece. Props to Glover and his familiar cast of collaborators, director Hiro Murai, producer Ludwig Goransson, and choreographer Sherrie Silver.

For after viewing: read this Twitter thread that explores the connections between Guava Island and much of Glover’s other works. Definitely makes you think.

Donald Glover FX Pilot cast

Over the holiday weekend, we heard the next development for Donald Glover’s upcoming FX show, Atlanta, which now has a cast and is all the more ready for production and airing.

Glover himself will play Earnest “Earn” Marks. Earn is described as an artistic loner who left Atlanta to further his dreams of success, only to return beneath the dark cloud of supposed failure which informs his troubled relationship with Van — with whom he shares a daughter. Van is played by Zazie Beetz (Applesauce).

Earn’s cousin Alfred Miles, Atlanta’s most bankable and on-the-rise hip-hop star, is portrayed by Brian Tyree Henry — who you might recognize from HBO‘s Vice Principals or The Good Wife. Sensing an opportunity, Earn attempts to offer his services as Alfred’s manager — again seeking a path out of Atlanta. Alfred’s creative partner, Darius, will be played Lakeith Lee Stanfield (Dope, Selma).

The plot details that come with these characters sound pretty fascinating, in fact. I’m lookin’ forward to seeing it, hopefully by the end of this year as Atlanta begins filming later this month. Glover will also executive produce.

Childish Gambino premieres new song at Bonnaroo

All falsetto, no rhymes. What do you think?

I had a buddy message me he was not happy, but I like Gambino’s singing more than most. A studio version of this will definitely help my mixed first reaction because this didn’t jump out like other top-tier singing songs like “The Palisades” most recently. I dig the live band and energy though. Here’s the live video making its rounds.

New Childish Gambino album in the works

Was literally talking with a fellow Gambino fan a couple weeks ago that it was about time for a new album from the Grammy-nominated artist this summer.

There’s no date or estimate for a new album, but this is a promising sign… tweets spotted by Reddit users show a 50 singer studio session for Gambino’s album taking place last night.

Whoo. That’s a lot of singers. Also a good sign because a triumphant choir always sounds great. Look at Gambino in the middle of that pic too, /serious face.
