Rapsody and Jamla Records invaded South Africa not too long ago and one of the results of the trip is this new music video for “Godzilla”, directed by Cam Be.
Cam kills it from the opening frame with a timelapse of the entire flight from the States to Africa. Whaaaat! I had to run it back already.
The video then proceeds with a mix of clips from Rapsody’s sold-out performance, meeting new fans, and action shots amidst the daylight and culture. See if you can catch every slick NBA reference in the rhymes as well. Very cool, all the way around.
This time last week, the previews for the Jamla Is The Squad compilation album were super heavy. “No Competition” & “15 Minutes of Fame” were my favorites and those collabs set the tone for the full project that dropped today. 9th Wonder‘s label pulled out all the stops for the 25 (!) new tracks with production primarily helmed by Khrysis and the boss man himself. Jamla artists Rapsody, GQ, Heather Victoria, the newest signee, Chicago’s Add-2, and more all appear on the album, with big-name features from Talib Kweli, Phonte, Blu, Pete Rock, Lecrae, and BJ The Chicago Kid also appearing. Hosted by Statik Selektah. Stream and purchase below via the good friends at DJ Booth.
Another day, another gem off the upcoming Jamla Records compilation Jamla Is The Squad. This one is a Chicago affair as R&B and hip hop mix with BJ The Chicago Kid & Add-2 rhyming over a smooth 9th Wonder production. “15 Minutes of Fame” first features an introspective BJ carrying the first half of the track upset at the lady who left him and that he’s moved on. Great vocal performance by him on this. Add-2 concluded the record with a great guest verse, addressing the lady with references that tie in to each other a few lines after another. For example, keep your ears perked for his Neo from The Matrix reference.
All in all, “15 Minutes Of Fame” feels like one of those smooth hip hop/R&B hybrids from like 10 years ago. I loved that vibe and love this one too. Instant *Tibs Fav. with the full project dropping January 28th. Listen below, along with the previous previews.
ICYMI: Talib Kweli, eLZhi, & Phonte “No Competition” | Pete Rock, Lecrae, & Rapsody “Be Inspired”
Another smooth hip hop groove from the Jamla camp as their compilation album, Jamla Is The Squad, is shaping up to be something serious. It looks like 9th is reaching out to all his close connects in the game for some dope collab. Earlier this week it was Talib Kweli, eLZhi, & Phonte for “No Competition”. Today, it’s Pete Rock, Lecrae, and Rapsody linking over a Khrysis production for “Be Inspired”.
Pete Rock’s chill tone is the nice first match to the beat that may lull you in. I thought Lecrae picked up the energy next to keep me tuned in, as the alliteration he starts with is my favorite part of the song. Rapsody bats last and does her thing too, making sure this record is a complete one. Look for the full compilation project on January 28th.
Here’s your new hip hop add to the rotation today. It features new raps, real good ones too, from Talib Kweli, eLZhi, & Phonte over a tight production from Khrysis for the upcoming Jamla Records compilation album, Jamla Is The Squad. Whoo. I’m running this one back, specifically for eLZhi’s verse if I had to pick one. Enjoy!
