Lil Bibby “2014 XXL Freshmen Freestyle”

Lil Bibby’s turn as the XXL Freshmen Freestyles continue. I thought the freestyle got better as it progressed but some of the punchlines fell flat or were too basic compared to other things I’ve heard. That being said, Bibby’s tough rhymes are reppin’ Chi on a landmark XXL Freshmen cover that the city is definitely getting behind.

2014 XXL Freshman Class

The 2014 XXL Freshman Class.

Chicago leads all cities with four representas: Chance, Vic Mensa, Lil Durk, and Lil Bibby. Other rappers taking their expected places are TDE’s Isaiah Rashad, Kevin Gates, and Rich Homie Quan. Filling it out is Ty Dolla $ign, August Alsina, Troy Ave, Jarren Benton, and Jon Connor. “*Yeah we’ve got R&B this year”, says XXL.

Congrats to all involved — it’s certainly a great look like in year’s past. But does the spot on the cover really carry that much weight? My answer is: No, at least not as much as it used to. Music blogs (like you’re favorite one here :D) has put many of these artists on your radar for more than a year, so the definition of “freshman” becomes as skewed as ever. You get artists on here like, most obviously, Chance who fans were all up in arms about for his 2013 snub because of everything he’s accomplished for the 2-3 years prior. I guess I just wish there were harder prerequisites that define a “freshman”. It’s just subjective at the end of the day, after all. Again though, it is a great look as you’ll see on your Twitters that everyone is talking about it this evening. Weigh in there with your thoughts! @gowherehiphop

Nicki Minaj “Chi-Raq” f/ Lil’ Herb

Can she be stopped?

Nicki Minaj destroys yet another track all while managing to give Chicago a shoutout in a major way. Featuring  Chicago rapper Lil’ Herb, known for his collaborations with Lil’ Bibby, the track is a tribute to the sometimes violent parts of the Southside area of the city, infamously dubbed as “Chi-Raq.”

Chicago appreciates the shoutout Nicki.

Her next LP, rumored to be titled “The Pink Print”, is expected sometime later this year. The YMCMB Goddess will surely destroy, once again.
