OVO Fest Recap: Drake roasts Meek Mill, brings out Kanye, Pharrell, Skepta, Future

Live updates comin’ in from Toronto as the expected star-studded OVO Fest affair is going off without a hitch… and going on with a bevy of guest stars.

Widely expected surprise/not so surprise guests Kanye West, Skepta, and Future all appeared. (UPDATE: Pharrell too. Didn’t expect that one!) The former sounds like he had his own concert within Drake’s concert, in fact. And to top it off, Drake roasted Meek Mill with a slideshow of MEMEs. (I led it off above with my favorite, and I’m sure there’s more.) The tweets/clips below, to be updated throughout the night. At posting time, Kanye’s set is still going on. Wow. (UPDATES on the top now as the fest closed with “Know Yourself” and apparently “Back To back” again.)

Oh, while we wait for “3Peat”…

50 Cent watching this all unfold from his phone… haha!

King Louie ‘Drilluminati 3’

King Louie’s got the 3rd edition of his Drilluminati series — God of Drill — and the Chicago MC tabs a set of intriguing features and producers for the 16 track affair. PARTYNEXTDOOR, Fetty Wap, Dreezy, Cardo, C-Sick, among them. Listen/DL to the surprise mixtape below.

PARTYNEXTDOOR’s 1st interview

PARTYNEXTDOOR finally provides his first ever interview as part of his new cover story with FADER.

He tackles a variety of subjects like how he got his name, submitting music for Justin Bieber, and the inevitable Weeknd comparisons he receives. Read it in full here.

People throw that [Weeknd comparison] over me because I came at a time where people assumed I was there to fill a void,” he says, alluding to The Weeknd’s departure from the OVO fold in 2012. “A lot of things that came out of Toronto were darker at the time. But me? I’m all about colors. I’ll flip samples where one’s a completely dark song and the next one is a complete sexual song. People think my whole thing is a dark thing, but I don’t.

Wiz Khalifa premieres PND collab

Wiz and PND seem like a natural fit for a collab and it turns out it’s coming sooner than we think.

At SXSW last night, Wiz premiered their song together called “Rain”. Here’s the first look/listen.

PND previews new song in Minnesota

Love the Ricky Rubio love. (I still believe in him!)

Oh, but that’s besides the point because in last night’s tour stop in the ‘Sota, PARTYNEXTDOOR premiered a never before heard track. Sounds, well, pretty good from the fan footage. Reserving a serious listen though until it’s dropped properly. For the PND mega-fans though…

Drake ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late’

Some updates in the fallout of last night’s surprise release:

For one, Tyga responded to Drake’s (excellent) diss on “6PM in New York” with some since deleted tweets.

Moving on, Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is projected for a whopping 500K sold after last night’s stellar drop. Whow! Surprise releases FTW. You think Birdman got the message? Free agent Drizzy comin’ up…? We shall see…

First impressions: 2, 3, 4, 9, 12, 14, 15, 17 all inspired run backs immediately. That’s a higher than average percentage people. Looking forward to digesting this more as a whole this weekend for some further thoughts.

Cool story bro: I lit up at the sample of Henry Krinkle’s “Stay” because that’s a great tune to begin with but because Mickey Factz’ “Stay” has been a rotation mainstay (no pun intended) since December. PND and Drake is way different and I like it a lot, but I gotta go with Mickey’s use of the sample more. Speaks to the latter.

02.12.15: It’s great when rumors come true. That was the case today as Drake does indeed drop a surprise new mixtape, not album, on iTunes (it costs money though.) Back with more commentary and an update, but all you need is below.

PND is back with some new music and a surprise drop of a 4-song FreEP #PNDCOLOURS.

As you can see from the cover art, you can connect the EP title. You can also see features from Travi$ Scott & Ca$h Out, both artists having dollar signs in their names. Maybe it’s a strong indicator that they’re money… find out for yourself below.

(“Girl From Oakland” my early favorite. This line and entire song “Jus Know”, too.)
