Southpaw Soundtrack (Tracklist)

UPDATE 07.24.15: Here’s the full stream. After seeing the movie, the soundtrack fits even better than you may think on paper. And yeah… go see the movie. Great performance by Jake Gyllenhaal.

UPDATE: The real tracklist is released today and is perhaps even more intriguing than the fake one. Eminem & Gwen Stefani?! That sounds like it could be cool. Plus, a tribute to the late James Horner, who passed away over the weekend in a tragic plane crash. The legendary composer has “Cry For Love” on the intro/outro. All executive produced by Eminem and in stores July 24th.

06.12.15: Today, Shady Records revealed the cover art above for the upcoming soundtrack to Southpaw, executive produced by the one and only Eminem.

Out now on the Soundtrack is “Phenomenal”, which I initially greeted with a mediocre review. As the Beats commercials have steadily played throughout this NBA Finals, the hit-or-miss hook grew on me to ‘hit’ status and further listens of the single have put it in *Tibs Fav. status. The non-melodic flows still get to me, but I can’t ignore the words and the subtle woman’s voice that adds a punch to the production.

Quick tangent aside, I’m a little more excited now for both the soundtrack and the movie itself, which I learned today was written with Eminem in mind for the lead character. Wow. Makes sense, huh?

Eminem ‘Not Afraid’ Outtakes

These are some outtakes from the recent Eminem ‘Not Afraid: The Shady Records Story’ documentary from Complex. It’s just a quick one minute watch and worth your time because otherwise I wouldn’t be posting it as Em has a couple of classic silly moments.

Plus, this is a good excuse to bring back the awareness of the documentary in general — a fascinating 30 minute sit-down with Eminem, manager Paul Rosenberg, 50 Cent, and Dr. Dre. I loved a lot of the behind the scenes stories they shared so for any Em fan, this is one to carve out some time for.

Eminem ‘Shady XV’ (Album Stream)

It’s Shady XV day — celebrating 15 years of Shady Records since Marshall’s debut album, The Slim Shady LP. It’s a 2-disc set with the 1st containing all new records from the label; Eminem appearing on over half of them. Disc 2 is some familiar classics + the bonus track demo version of “Lose Yourself” that dropped last week and I have a full review on in the link.

Of the new Eminem tracks on Disc 1, and save for the official releases before today, I’d check “Twisted” with Skylar Grey & Yelawolf. Em’s familiar collaborator for a killer female hook does it again, yet this one’s different because the song is, as advertised, twisted. Brings me back to the Eminem of 10/15 years ago.

Eminem & Shady 66 track mixtape in the works

Looks like we shouldn’t just expect the Shady XV album next week..!

The folks at Rap Radar talked to the Shady Records higher-ups for a lengthy podcast below where it was revealed that Em & Shady are preparing a 66 track mixtape! What?!

The only details revealed, but they’re juicy ones: Paul Rosenberg spoke on a few of the tracks that may land on the tape — Eminem’s version of “Wanksta”, 50 Cent’s “I Get Money (Billion Dollar Remix)”, and perhaps a different version of Obie Trice’s “Hey Lady” (loved the original). DJ Whoo Kid is behind both the mixtape and the album, so for the tape, I’d suspect a series of quick verses and blends in raw fashion and style. The tape is hinted at for next week so keep it locked!
