Shlohmo ‘Dark Red’ (Album Stream)

L.A. producer Shlohmo has continually impressed since I’ve followed him after his first Jeremih collab a few years ago now. This may be his best work to date.

The album carries a dark tone throughout, which is what I expected, but the amount of layers and changes within each track give the album an even longer feel. It took me a track to get into the mood as “Meet Ur Maker” is what really reeled me in. The couple of the descriptions I read (below) are pretty apt. I enjoyed the fusion of metal, for instance, which means I was one of the young ones actually excited at the Metallica headlining Lolla announcement last week.

The album is an uncanny marriage of his ever-evolving, richly textured sound with shades of 90s IDM, R&B, cassette-tape Jungle, and, in an unexpected turn, sludge metal. “It sounds like if Electric Wizard tried to make an R&B record,” he says, “or Boards of Canada meets Burzum by the River Styx.”

Many of the song titles on Shlohmo’s second album, “Dark Red,” describe transitions: “Emerge From Smoke,” “Slow Descent,” “Fading.” These feel appropriate for the Los Angeles producer, who makes oozing, transformative music that slips from soundscape into another.

Other top-tier tracks I enjoyed: “Emerge From Smoke”, “Slow Descent”, “Relentless”, and “Fading” (the latter two, more uptempo.) This is the type of album that’ll only grow on you with more listens, I can already tell. Click again here and vibe out. (Love this album art of the rose too.)

Shlohmo “Emerge From Smoke”

For many, we were introduced to Shlohmo through fire collab after fire collab with Jeremih. His new solo single hit iTunes today as the producer cranks out another dark, thumpin’ jam that should hit your rotation.

Favorite part? The melody that comes in at about the 2:20 mark. Wow.

P.S. With a song title like “Emerge From Smoke”, I had to pull this out…

Shlohmo & Jeremih “Fuck You All The Time”

The instantly engaging and seductive “Fuck You All The Time” off the Shlohmo & Jeremih collab EP gets the all-new proper visuals above. Cool colors, a throwback overlay to call-in infomercials, and of course, sexy ladies on the phone make up the video and it’s one that’ll inspire a renewed revisit of the song and No More in my rotation today. I wish these two worked together even more.

Shlohmo & Jeremih ‘No More EP’

Yes! A pleasant surprise today as the one collab project I was waiting for: Shlohmo and Jeremih‘s No More EP drops today, suddenly, without any warning or notice. 6 new tracks with one feature by Chance The Rapper.

The keen listener has already heard “No More”, “Fuck You All The Time”, and “Bo Peep” and that’s what has me excited for the project. If you look at it one way, it’s unfortunate there’s only 3 more tracks, but they all follow that vibe, create a continuous flow, and leave me wanting for more. Definitely worth a listen/download below and the type of music I’d love to keep comin’ from Jeremih.

Shlohmo & Jeremih “No More”

After last year’s well-received “Bo Peep”, Shlohmo & Jeremih are linking up for a full collaborative EP. The project’s title track is the first release below as “No More” features a similar dark aesthetic that is refreshing for Jeremih’s usual sound. I have been vibing with the genre’s general turn towards darker moods the past few years and this is another good example of why. Everything sounds crisp and it’s only going to grow on me with more listens. Look out for the EP to drop in full this March and hopefully some visuals to bring it to life as well.
