Dr. Dre & Ice Cube cover RollingStone

The timing’s impeccable as Dr. Dre & Ice Cube don the cover of the new RollingStone. (That’s one way of getting an audience upset at Kim Kardashian’s clevage donning the last cover, but I digress…)

In a few snippets posted today, Dre reveals one more tidbit on why Detox wasn’t completed and why he’s always in the shadows. Read the rest here.

I had between 20 and 40 songs for Detox and I just couldn’t feel it. Usually I can hear the sequence of an album as I’m going, but I wasn’t able to do that. I wasn’t feeling it in my gut. So I really thought I was done being an artist.

Dr. Dre reveals the real reason he can come off as a distant figure.
“I have social anxiety,” he says. “I don’t like being in the spotlight, so I made a fucking weird career choice.” He laughs. “That’s the reason for my mystique and why I’m so secluded and why everybody knows nothing about me. I think it added to the character in the movie because people get a chance to see behind the curtain.”

1st Listen Impressions:

  • Very positive. The album bangs from beginning to end, with layers like horn solos that enter the overall sound too. Definitely a Compton/west coast sound that you’d expect, and it’s definitely modern too. Also: don’t even listen if it’s not loud. High volume adds to the experience, for sure.
  • It’s tough to find a drawback in tracks 1-9. The first half of the album is strongest, brought in properly by the intro + first real track. This stretch also has features 3 (!) Kendrick Lamar features in this stretch. All of them are on point and I liked his work on “Darkside/Gone” and “Deep Water” a little more than “Genocide”.
  • The beat drop for Xzibit and his subsequent energy was new/classic. That definitely worked.
  • Cube’s feature + the murder fantasy on that track took the album a dark direction for a couple songs that I feel longtime fans will definitely appreciate. Reminds me of the 90s.
  • Dre himself is flowin with more rhythm than some of his random, rare appearances in the past few years.
  • Singers doin it justice too, specifically Marsha Ambrosius, BJ The Chicago Kid, and Anderson .Paak. Dap to Asia Bryant on “Just Another Day” too.
  • Wait, can you imagine this album live? It flows really well and will definitely jump another level if the rumored Straight Outta Compton Tour with N.W.A. and Eminem comes to fruition. Whoo!
  • Ran back “Medicine Man” twice in a row. Dre and Em definitely feels right and both delivered. How bout Dre disgusted at today’s rap game?! The eerie, and explicit female hook from Candice Pillay works. Then Eminem kept getting better and better and even had some shock value lines along the way. Lots of songs will make the rotation for awhile to come, this is one of them.
  • R.I.P. Eazy-E. Dre appropriately paid homage to him throughout, especially to close it out on “Talking To My Diary”. *applauds*

What are your first impressions?! Let me know @gowherehiphop

UPDATE: Lots of speculation of Kendrick sub-dissing Drake in “Deep Water”, namely the beginning and end bars of his. Also on “Darkside/Gone”:

But still I got enemies giving me energy I wanna fight now
Subliminally sent to me all of this hate
I thought I was holding the mic down…

I dunno, part of me feels like this is a stretch. (In fact, Mickey sums it up well.) But whatever the case, the bars are hot and if it snowballs into an even greater competition, I’m all for it.

ICYMI: Dr. Dre talks Compton with Zane Lowe

Dr. Dre dropping album on August 1

Dre is dropping an album inspired by the Compton movie. He’s dropping something on August 1.

– Ice Cube

It’s not Detox but if this is indeed true, hey, we’re all for that. The timing works out with Straight Outta Compton‘s theatrical release near and of course, his ties to Apple Music. Cube broke the news and added, “It’s mega, it’s Dr. Dre, it’s what everybody’s been waiting for. It’s definitely a dope record, and he’s dropping it all on the same day,” to Philadelphia’s Power 99. We shall see soon enough… Video below.

N.W.A. Reunion Tour with Eminem in the works

Emphasis on “in the work”, but with the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton nearing release this summer, the follow up tour only makes more sense. And how about Eminem in the late Eazy-E’s spot. This would bring out rap fans old, new, whatever. Hope it happens, as teased in the new profile by Hollywood Reporter.

According to a new interview in THR, the studio wants to set up a European N.W.A. reunion tour with Dr. DreDJ YellaMC Ren, Ice Cube, and then add Eminem to the mix. The possible reunion tour has yet to be finalized with everyone’s busy schedules to deal with, but there is no doubt that this would create considerable buzz for the film. “We don’t have anything settled yet with everyone’s schedules,” Donna Langley from Universal told THR. “But we think it can create a lot of buzz.”

Both Eminem and Dre are set to appear on the film’s official soundtrack, which will be released around the time of the film and also include an appearance from Kendrick Lamar. Dre and Cube also talked about the Suge Knight situation in the THR interview, with each of them recalling the day the incident happened, though they weren’t sure if Knight showed up that day to cause trouble. “It’s just a really unfortunate incident,” Dre said. “Maybe [Knight] was looking for trouble. I don’t know.” You can read the full profile here

Eminem, Kendrick, & Dre on Straight Outta Compton Soundtrack

The Straight Outta Compton Soundtrack is set to be a heater, but you should have already assumed that. But now we know a little bit more for sure as the biopic’s director, F. Gary Gray told MTV News:

“Dr. Dre, it took him 15 years to step out and say, ’I want to do music again’ in the way that he’s doing it. The soundtrack is insane. Seriously, it’s incredible.”

He goes on to say that Kendrick Lamar and Eminem are among the many great guest stars. I hope we’ll be blessed with a majority of all-new original songs and perhaps, fingers crossed, even an Em x Kendrick collab!?

Straight Outta Compton (Trailer)

Up above: the all-new theatrical trailer for the upcoming N.W.A. biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton’, different than that that premiered Super Bowl weekend.

The movie drops August 14th, and below, browse the all-new movie posters today. The casting looks great from the looks standpoint and as a fan of Paul Giamatti, I think he’ll play a good role as N.W.A.’s manager.

Scarface remake in the works

Wait, they’re remaking Scarface?!

Yup, and newly attached to the project by Universal is the writer for the upcoming N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, Jonathan Herman.

Now, hold on a second, how are they going to remake one of the most iconic movies and characters? There was only one Al Pacino as Tony Montana and the various scenes that came with it. Not to mention Miami in the 80s was the perfect setting. I guess I’ll be open to a new story, which reports say will be set in Los Angeles, but Al Pacino and Scarface is one of those rare 1 of 1’s that shouldn’t be touched.

The movie is still in its beginning stages (in fact, this is the third attempt at the script) so we’ll likely have some updates on the Scarface remake progress throughout the year.
