The Boy Illinois continually impresses with each new project and his next chance to do so is Dusable below — 10 tracks including one of my favorite rap collabs when it dropped “BlackMale” f/ Twista & Trae Tha Truth.
On here, Illi primarily goes solo save for the collabs with a frequent guest singer of his, Drey Skonie. As such, “All I Want” and especially “Ruling Class ’15” are early favorites. The latter features some of the best raps from Illi on the tape and Skonie covering Lauryn Hill’s hook on “If I Ruled The World”. Very well-executed, and very fresh.
Overall? Illi’s flow is still one of the smoothest in the Chi. He adapts well to some new trap sounds that I haven’t always heard him on too. Some of those are a mixed bag to me, but it speaks to Illi’s versatility even moreso. You’ll find something you like so without further ado… press play below.
Here’s a Chicago collab you should lend your eyes and ears to. Up and comer Aaron Johnson links with The Boy Illinois for a motivational record to puff your chest out to while ridin’ in the car. It’s supplemented by a slow, trap beat by Dru B. that really connects with an addicting core melody. And for the video, they all linked with D-Gainz to give everyone the proper face-time for a song that stands out due to all the one-liners.
Aaron Johnson especially goes crazy with the similes that overall, I enjoyed. Perhaps the ‘less is more’ theory would make some of the punchlines pop a little more, but especially as an NBA fan I appreciated most all of ’em. He name drops Leon Powe after all. (The Luol Deng one was probably my favorite and choice for his most clever.) Illi does his thing as well on the 3rd guest verse and slows down the flow even more. This alone is worth a listen as Illi rides a successful 2014 into the new year. All artists involved come correct so when you need a break from today’s Kendrick song, queue this one up right after.
The Boy Illinois is gearing up for the release of his next project Point (New Age Colonialism), but today he gives us this new mixtape with 9 new songs from Illi. With no features Illi did this one strictly for the fans, and it will definitely hold the people down while we anticipate Point (New Age Colonialism).
F.A. The Squad is at it again. This time we have The Boy Illinois who has two projects getting ready to drop in the near future, the first being The Yer Tape that’s coming January 13th. Today he gives us his first single from that project “Coldest Playa Eva” produced by High Klassified. Simply put Illi is staking his claim as the “Coldest Playa Eva”.
Make sure to also be on the lookout for Pointe (New Age Colonialism) to be dropping soon as well.
The Super Fresh Bros have consistently been taking their game to new heights and now reach the “Bonus Stage”, their latest EP project featuring the likes of Alex Wiley, ShowYouSuck, The Boy Illinois, amounts others. The game isn’t over, these Bros are just getting started.
If you slept on this song in the summer, now’s the time to wake up.
The Boy Illinois links up with Twista in the hometown and Trae Tha Truth in his out in Houston for the new “Black Male” video — a crispy, fast-paced visual to match the break-neck pace of the song itself.
As I alluded to over the summer, even with the esteemed guest stars, Illi was the brightest star of ’em all.
I stand by that even though, again, Trae and Twista kill it. Maybe it’s the Sting in the rafters line that gives Illi the slight edge. But you simply can’t not appreciate some vintage Twista to close the song too. Trae sounds perfect in the middle and C.O.O.P. also kills it on the production, allowing for each rapper to flex their skill one right after another.
The video has its variety of scenes and plenty of eye candy throughout, but lowkey the slept on shots of the video are the early downtown looks with Illi. These landmarks seem obvious to capture, but are oddly not seen in any Chicago rap videos that I can think of. At least not like this, so the hometown pride beams. Watch, take it all in, and enjoy!
The Yer Tape drops on Tuesday so get ready for that too…
Two of Chicago’s own flip an old two-man collab, “Car Service” by Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa for “You God”. Illi plays the Wiz Khalifa part, putting down a slick flow for the first half of the track. Co-sign on the potholes complaint too, ha! Jewels follows next showing his versatility with a high-pitched delivery he sustains throughout. All in all, good Friday vibes below:
