The 11 tracks to appear on the upcoming Roots album, And Then You Shoot Your Cousin, were revealed today and I was surprised, then not surprised, to see no “big name” features, but instead frequent collaborators like Dice Raw and Raheem DeVaughn. Peruse below and cop the album May 20th.

ICYMI: The Roots featured in NBA Round 1 Soundtrack | “Tomorrow” | “When The People Cheer”
Three words: New Roots single. Yup, I’m attentive as well.
“Tomorrow” is the latest, and second, preview of The Roots’ upcoming album, And Then You Shot Your Cousin, and it features Raheem DeVaughn singing all of the song’s vocals over a minimalistic production. Simple snares, simple piano keystrokes, and a soulful output from Raheem.
Although all of the above sounds like it would connect with me, “Tomorrow” didn’t quite do so. The minimalism didn’t have the ‘less is more’ impact on me, as much as the, ‘this is kind of boring’ consequence. It was only when the piano kicked in for the outro that I felt an extra level of energy. Plus, the overdose of reverb contributed to its predictability by the 3 minute mark. Perhaps it’ll grow on me, but I’m moreso looking forward to how the next preview of the album will differ. And Then… drops May 19th.
The Roots‘ new album art is actual art work. I love the painting, whose details is below.

What a moment this was. ICYMI, on last night’s Tonight Show, Nas performs the ‘Illmatic’ classic “One Love” with some help from Q-Tip & The Roots with his Illmatic XX album dropping next Tuesday on the 20th anniversary. Great to see the energy from the veteran legends.
ICYMI: The Roots’ new single from yesterday “When The People Cheer”
The 1st single off The Roots‘ upcoming 13th studio album ‘& Then You Shoot Your Cousin’! This one will grow on you with more listens and is something a lil different, delivery-wise, from the crew.
This time last year, could you have expected Ty Dolla $ign on the Tonight Show?!
If you said yes to that question, thank you Ty Dolla $ign for reading Gowhere. Salute to the grind of the fast-rising hitmaker as he takes his DJ Mustard-produced smash hit “Paranoid”, mixes it with the versatile live instruments of The Roots, for a performance on last night’s Fallon. Slick Kobe throwback as well (I always root for the comebacks of throwback jerseys).
This year’s annual Roots Picnic is another event to try and get to. The 7th version of the fest features a jam-packed lineup revealed today, headlined by Snoop Dogg, who will be performing his myriad classics with the backing of The Legendary Roots Crew. I’d also be excited to see singers Janelle Monae and Jhene Aiko and a variety of rappers on the rise in Action Bronson and A$AP Ferg, and DJ sets like AraabMUZIK and Just Blaze. If you’re looking for a weekend to go to Philly, here’s your pick. Video of the announcement below:
