Vic Mensa premieres the new visual for his dabbling into the dance genre with “Down On My Luck”. The club/hip hop single, produced by Stefan Ponce, gets the appropriate club hopping storyline — multiple storylines, in fact. Cool concept, made even better with subtleties like the iMessages popping up. Strong output overall from Vic.
The 2014 XXL Freshman Class.
Chicago leads all cities with four representas: Chance, Vic Mensa, Lil Durk, and Lil Bibby. Other rappers taking their expected places are TDE’s Isaiah Rashad, Kevin Gates, and Rich Homie Quan. Filling it out is Ty Dolla $ign, August Alsina, Troy Ave, Jarren Benton, and Jon Connor. “*Yeah we’ve got R&B this year”, says XXL.
Congrats to all involved — it’s certainly a great look like in year’s past. But does the spot on the cover really carry that much weight? My answer is: No, at least not as much as it used to. Music blogs (like you’re favorite one here :D) has put many of these artists on your radar for more than a year, so the definition of “freshman” becomes as skewed as ever. You get artists on here like, most obviously, Chance who fans were all up in arms about for his 2013 snub because of everything he’s accomplished for the 2-3 years prior. I guess I just wish there were harder prerequisites that define a “freshman”. It’s just subjective at the end of the day, after all. Again though, it is a great look as you’ll see on your Twitters that everyone is talking about it this evening. Weigh in there with your thoughts! @gowherehiphop

I can see both artists’ styles clashing naturally and we’re no doubt looking forward to the final product here at Gowhere.
ICYMI earlier today, read Maks G’s review and introspective look at Mike Posner’s journey, as revealed in his Unplugged Tour. He even curated a Mike Posner playlist for you all to vibe to along the way. #RelateLoveInspire
Nardwaur, who I’m sure works for the FEDS got a chance to chop it up with Vic Mensa during SXSW. They talked about WHPK 88.5, Hyde Park, Italian Fiesta and even brought DJ Oreo in on the conversation. Like all Nardwaur interviews this one surely entertains.
